Renaming in the addition algorithm

Many teachers ask how to help students record the renaming process in the addition algorithm.  What language should I use?

I learned to “make trades” or “borrow” when adding and subtracting that require renaming.  Is this still correct?

Regrouping is typically used when students are using base ten blocks to work through the problem. When the student moves to abstraction and recording the process on paper, we say renaming.
The language is not as critical but may add layers of subtle differences that can confuse an already complicated process.
Below is an example of recording methods to help students understand the renaming process.
