### Each topic in this chapter engages students in the following ways:

EXPLORE: Videos pose a task for students to solve.

PRACTICE: Students practice the key ideas.

REFLECT: Students consolidate learning by journaling.

## CHAPTER 1 NUMBERS TO 10,000,000

In this chapter, students will learn to read and write numbers to 10,000,000 in numerals and words. The concept of the base-ten number system will be reinforced in getting the students to develop the concept of 1,000,000 and 10,000,000. The students will used number disks and the place-value chart to progress from the concrete to the abstract stage in their learning.

Upon understanding the concept of the numbers to 10,000,000, the students will compare and order the numbers using mathematical symbols ‘>’ and ‘<’. Students will also learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 1,000,000 using the number line.

## Chapter 2 FOUR OPERATIONS ON WHOLE NUMBERS

In this chapter, students will learn to apply the rule for mixed operations, multiply and divide by 2-digit numbers as well as multiply and divide by powers of 10. Students will use number disks as well as diagrams to help them to understand the multiplication and division by 2-digit numbers and powers of 10.

## CHAPTER 3 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS

In this chapter, students will learn to add and subtract proper fractions and mixed numbers. For the addition and subtraction of proper fractions, students will start with related fractions before progressing to unrelated fractions. The need to simplify the fractions will also be included in the lessons.

Similarly, for addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, the students will progressively transit from mixed number and proper fraction to mixed number and mixed number.

## CHAPTER 4 MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION OF FRACTIONS

In this chapter, students will learn to multiply and divide fractions with understanding. Students will learn to multiply a proper fraction and a proper fraction before multiplying a whole number and mixed number. Students will also learn to associate division with fraction. The students will learn how to divide fractions by whole numbers, unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. The drawing of the bar models to represent the fractions and mixed numbers to be multiplied or divided will be illustrated in the lessons.

## CHAPTER 5 DECIMALS

In this chapter, students will learn to read and write decimals up to the thousandths place. They will use the number line to show the positions of the decimals. Then the students will learn how to compare decimals up to the thousandths place. Students will also learn how to round decimals to the nearest whole number, tenths and hundredths place. The use of base-ten blocks, decimals disks, place value charts, place value cards and number lines will help the students to demonstrate their understanding of decimals.

## CHAPTER 6 FOUR OPERATIONS ON DECIMALS

In this chapter, students will learn to add and subtract decimals up to 2 decimal places. Students will also learn to multiply and divide decimals by a 2-digit whole number. Students will use number disks and number bonds to help them to understand the concepts of the four operations.

## CHAPTER 7 WORD PROBLEMS

In this chapter, students will learn to solve word problems using Polya’s 4-step problem solving approach namely understand the problem, make a plan, carry out the plan and check your answer or look back. Bar models will used to understand the problem and helped to make a plan. After carrying out the plan, students will learn to check their answers as well as to look back to see how the solution can be applied to a related word problem. Whole numbers and fractions will be used in the word problems.
