Each topic in this chapter engages students in the following ways:
EXPLORE: Videos pose a task for students to solve.
PRACTICE: Students practice the key ideas.
REFLECT: Students consolidate learning by journaling.
CHAPTER 1 NUMBERS TO 10,000
In this chapter, students will learn to read, write and represent numbers up to 10,000.
CHAPTER 2 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WITHIN 1,000
The addition and subtraction spiral continues with 3 and 4-digit numbers. Students build number sense in choosing suitable strategies for the given problem.
CHAPTER 3 MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
In this chapter, students will revisit the concept of multiplication and division learned at earlier levels and develop the ability to divide. Students use what they have learned about multiplying by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s to figure out 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s.
CHAPTER 4 MORE MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
In this chapter, students will learn how to multiply and divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers with or without regrouping using different strategies using number bonds, partial products, and the standard algorithm.
CHAPTER 5 WORD PROBLEMS WITH MIXED OPERATIONS
In this chapters, students use bar models as a tool for solving multi-step word problems using the four operations.
- C5.4 pg 133-134
- C5.6 pg 137-138
- C5.8 pg 141-142
CHAPTER 6 FRACTIONS
In this chapter, students will learn how to recognize fractions as the number of equal parts that make up a whole and write fractions by identifying the numerator and denominator. The main focus is on developing conceptual understanding for equivalent fractions.
CHAPTER 7 LENGTH AND HEIGHT
Students incorporate measuring work from Grade 2 and fractional work from Chapter 6 to estimate and measure objects to the nearest half and quarter unit. (inch, foot, yard, centimeter, meter)
